I have been in Australia for just under a month now! I’m halfway through my student teaching experience, and man, has time flown by! In this one month in Perth I have truly learned so much. I’ve gained new tools and ideas for my future classroom, grown in my independence, and had the chance to travel around Perth and experience beautiful Western Australia!

This week in the classroom, I did a fun lesson with my students where we compared Australian animals with American animals. I showed the students a picture of an animal from Australia and asked them to share facts they knew about it. Then, I presented a picture of an animal from America and shared some fun facts with them. The students then picked an animal to draw, and we put their artwork up on the board. I think they really enjoyed learning more about America and discovering some new animals! I’ve grown so close to these students; it’s such a great group of kids. The staff at Hillcrest has been nothing but welcoming to me. It will be so sad to say goodbye!

So far, I’ve explored much of Perth, including the city, Fremantle, Cottesloe, Scarborough, and even locally where I’m staying. The city of Perth, while large, is pretty quiet, which I really enjoy. Last weekend, I took an Uber to Cottesloe Beach, where I spent the morning. It was so windy and quite cold, but I enjoyed sipping on my latte and reading my book on the sand (wearing a sweater and jeans) while watching the waves crash. The beauty of this place will never cease to amaze me! I then traveled up the coast to Scarborough, where I visited Western Australia’s aquarium. There were lots of cool native sea animals there. I also went to a local church called TRIBES and loved it; there were so many young adults, which was encouraging to me! Tomorrow, we’re headed to a winery just a few minutes away for a wine, cheese, and chocolate tasting! I can’t wait to continue exploring this beautiful place.

This experience has been nothing but great for me! I’m halfway done, but there is still so much to look forward to!

Fridays I often walk to a local coffee van to grab some coffee! The to-go cups here are so pretty!
