Discovering the Culture of Australia

Week three in Australia is down, and I’m falling more in love with this city every day! I’ve finally settled into a rhythm here. In the classroom, I’ve built some strong relationships with my students and other staff members, and it really feels like a home away from home—even though it’s 10,000 miles away!

Last weekend, I visited Caversham Wildlife Park, a local wildlife rehab center. All the animals there are either rescued or born in captivity. I got to feed some kangaroos, pet a koala, and see so many native Australian animals up close! It was cool seeing these animals, which I’ve only ever seen in U.S. zoos, as actual local wildlife here. Next week, I’m teaching a lesson to my students where we will be comparing Australian and American animals, and I can’t wait!

Beyond the gorgeous weather and being just a few miles from the beach, the culture here is what I love most. If I had to describe it in a few words, it would be caring, laid-back, and adventurous. People here have a strong sense of community, and I feel like I’ve gained a bunch of school “grandmas”! Each classroom has an educational assistant, and these ladies spoil me with new Aussie treats every day! Today was also World Teachers’ Day, and one of my students surprised me with chocolate and a sweet card. I feel so welcomed and cared for in this school, even as a guest!

Something else I love about the culture here is how easygoing everyone is. Time feels like it moves slower, and people aren’t in such a hurry. There’s also a big emphasis on rest. A unique perk here is long service leave—after working in a position for five years, you get a three-month paid holiday! A lot of teachers take this time to travel, which is pretty different from American work culture.

This weekend, I plan to relax! Tomorrow, I’m heading to Cottesloe Beach with some coffee and a good book to enjoy the sun. With summer approaching, temps are expected to hit the high 90s next week!

This journey has already been incredible for my growth and independence, and I’m loving every second of it!
